The courage to begin
Every great journey starts with a single step. Crochet is not just a hobby — it’s a way to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and create something unique with your hands. At first, it may feel clumsy, stitches might slip, and your hands may not cooperate. But that’s where the magic begins. You don’t need perfection. What you need is the courage to try, to make mistakes, to repeat, and to grow a little more each day.
Every stitch you make tells a part of your story.
The right tools
1. Hook size
Start with a hook between 4 mm and 5 mm. It’s the perfect beginner size — not too small to struggle, not too large to lose control.
2. Yarn choice
Yarn is the soul of your project. For beginners, I recommend:
Soft cotton: easy to handle, shows stitches clearly.
Merino wool or alpaca (not too fluffy): warm and pleasant to work with.
Avoid acrylic or very thin yarns — they make it harder to see and control stitches.
Every stitch you make tells a part of your story.
Yarn color
Pick light or medium shades. Dark yarns hide the stitches and can be frustrating at the start.
First steps:
1. Tension
Your hands will naturally find their rhythm. At the beginning, your stitches may be too tight or too loose — don’t worry. With time, your tension will balance out.
2. Patience
Don’t expect a masterpiece right away. In the beginning, the goal is simply to learn how the yarn, the hook, and your hands work together.
3. Practice
Make small swatches: practice chains, single crochet, and double crochet. Even 10 minutes a day is enough to notice improvement.
The beauty of sharing
In the creative world, perfection doesn’t matter. The journey does. Even your first imperfect pieces hold value. Don’t be afraid to share them: fellow makers will cheer you on, not criticize you.
And one day, you’ll be the one encouraging someone else who’s just starting out.
My crochet journey began in an unusual way: with a bicycle spoke. I didn’t have the right tools, but I had the desire to learn. My fingers grew tired, sometimes numb, but I kept going. With every stitch, with every mistake, I discovered a world of creativity opening up before me.
Today, crochet is not just a hobby. It’s a passion, an opportunity, a lifestyle. And it all started with that piece of wire, that determination, and the courage to keep going.
Your journey starts now
You don’t need experience, only the will to create. Pick up a hook, choose a ball of yarn that inspires you, and begin. Even if your first work isn’t perfect, it will be the first step in your creative journey.
Take your time, savor every stitch, and let crochet lead you toward a slower, more mindful, and joyful life.
