Bloom Square Top

Here I am with a new project to inspire you.

A beautiful airy top to make for this wonderful season – light and lovely. This crochet top-shirt-vest (call it however you prefer!) can also be recreated in a warm yarn like wool, cashmere, or alpaca. You can wear it over a turtleneck or a shirt, or even as a summer top for the beach or to go dancing.

With just 300 grams of cotton, your top will be ready. If you’d like to make it like mine using two or more shades, go for it! As I always say: take the idea and personalize it however you like.

I recommend a medium-weight DK yarn, to be worked with a 3–3.5 mm crochet hook.

Structure of the Top

The top is made the same for front and back. We’ll start by making six square floral motifs, which will be joined into two groups of three motifs in a row.

After completing the two groups, we’ll connect them with a row by joining the first group to the second group using joining chains, and then we’ll work lengthwise to create the first shoulder, adding rows under the armholes to shape them. The same is done on the other side.

In the end, we’ll join the sides and finish off the neckline, armholes, and hem.

For the square motif, follow the pattern diagram.
The top is made in size M with a relaxed fit. The entire top was worked using light sky blue yarn. For the reverse rows, I used a dark turquoise color, also used in the floral motifs and for the finishing. Choose your favorite colors for a unique touch!

Start Here

Make 6 square floral motifs. Join them in two groups of 3 motifs in a row each.
Take the first group of motifs and place them in front of you. Start making the first joining row from the right corner of the first motif (on your right), going left.

Joining Row:
R1: ch10, work 3R mesh st along the entire row of the 3 motifs. At the last stitch, chain 33, yarn over 5 times, take the second group of 3 motifs and place them the same way, starting from the first corner on the right. Close two loops at a time. Continue working the 3R mesh st along the length of the 3 motifs. With this row, we’ve joined both motif groups, creating the neckline with the 33 chains we made.

R2: ch1, sl st, hdc – repeat this group along the row, ending with sl st.

R3: ch3, dc across the whole row.
R4: Repeat R2.
R5: ch26, work 8R mesh st along the full length of the 2 panels.
(To make this easier, use a Tunisian hook if you find it difficult to hold many loops on the hook.)

R6: Repeat R2
R7: Repeat R3
R8: Repeat R4
R9: ch16, work 5R mesh st for 50 stitches – this will shape the underarm section.
R10: Turn back and repeat R2.

Now, cut the yarn. Count 50 stitches on the other side and from the inside out, repeat Row 9 until the end of the row.
R10: Repeat Row 2

Now repeat all 11 rows on the other side of the motif group, first joining them with the 33 chains, then repeating all the rows.

Finishing

To finish the neckline and armholes, work on the wrong side:
Row 1: sl st, hdc
Turn to the right side and make 1 row of sc.
Do the same to finish the armholes.

For the hem of the top, work on the wrong side:
1 row of sl st, hdc
Then on the right side: make groups of 6 dc into one stitch, skip 3 stitches, 1 sc – to create a shell stitch border.
