A Rainy September Day at Home – Embracing Slow Living

The weather in Tuscany has been shifting from one day to another, and this morning I woke up to the gentle sound of raindrops tapping against the shutters.

The fresh, cool air slowly made its way into the house as soon as I opened the window. There’s something magical about the first rainy days of autumn—the air feels cleaner, the trees begin to change color, and everything seems to whisper: slow down.

I prepare breakfast slowly — nothing fancy, just crispbread and homemade fig jam. Meanwhile, my little girls wake up, and we enjoy breakfast together.

While my little girls spend a quiet moment watching some TV, I take care of the housework — passing the swiffer through the rooms and later ironing a few clothes. Simple daily tasks that make our home feel cozy and cared for.

When the rain finally softened, I grabbed my glass bottles and stepped outside to refill them at the local water distributor. It may seem like a small action, but for me, choosing glass over plastic is one way to care for the Earth. It’s a tiny step, yet every small choice matters.

Back home, it was time to prepare lunch. Today, I made orecchiette with homemade tomato sauce—simple, comforting, and full of flavor. The three of us sat at the table together, sharing laughter and food, creating memories in the middle of an ordinary rainy day.

After lunch, I tidied up the kitchen and then joined my girls for some playtime. We built colorful houses and castles out of Lego bricks, letting our imaginations guide us. I love these moments of connection, when time feels suspended.

Later in the afternoon, I started preparing pizza dough. It’s a soft, simple recipe, perfect for an easy family dinner.

While the dough was resting, my older daughter asked if she could bake a cake. We chose a soft, delicious yogurt and sunflower oil cake— light, and full of sweetness. Together, we measured the ingredients, mixed the batter, and filled the kitchen with the comforting smell of cake in the oven.

By the time the cake was cooling on the counter, the rain had stopped. The sky opened up, and the air felt fresh and renewed. We decided to take a walk in the countryside. The world outside was calm, washed clean by the rain. The only sounds were the crunch of our steps on the path and the distant songs of birds. Walking there with my girls, surrounded by fields and silence, I felt a deep gratitude for the simple joys of life.

Choosing a Slower Life

Days like this remind me why I love slow living. It’s not about doing less, but about doing everything with presence. Cooking simple meals, playing with my children, baking, walking in nature—these are the things that nourish the soul.

In a world that rushes, I choose to slow down. To breathe. To savor homemade food, warm drinks, laughter, and the quiet rhythm of everyday life. I hope my story inspires you to find beauty in your own days—to embrace the rain, to welcome the season of change, and to remember that happiness often hides in the simplest of moments.
